Fibre or copper in the building — and when each one fits

Five criteria that decide the transmission medium in commercial construction. And why the honest answer in most buildings is: both, in different places.

It is rarely an either-or question

"Should we run fibre?" is usually asked as though one answer had to cover the whole building. In practice the question splits into several. What applies to the link between two buildings is not what applies to the riser between floors, and neither matches the answer for the outlet beside a desk.

Both media have clear strengths. Copper carries data and power in the same cable and connects to any endpoint without extra hardware. Fibre has effectively no length limit at building scale, picks up no electrical interference and carries heavy aggregation in very little containment space. One note before we start: where this article says "in the building", it means commercial property. Private connections and residential buildings are outside what we work on.

Neither is superior to the other. They solve different problems, which is exactly why they get combined.

Close to the endpoint

  • Carries data and supply power in the same cable
  • Every endpoint has the matching socket, no converter needed
  • Inexpensive in material and labour over short distances
  • Limited to one hundred metres of total channel length
  • Sensitive to strong electrical interference
Fibre

Across distance and interference

  • Reach far beyond the boundaries of a single building
  • Immune to electromagnetic coupling
  • High bandwidth with very little space taken in containment
  • Cannot supply power to endpoints
  • Needs active equipment or a media converter at each end

Five questions that decide the choice

Work through them per link rather than per building. The answer for the backbone and the answer for a desk usually differ.

  • How long is the run?

    Anything past the copper ceiling of one hundred metres means either an additional cabinet or fibre. On industrial sites and in long halls this is the classic reason to switch.

  • What does the environment look like electrically?

    Drives, inverters and welding equipment generate interference. Where cable routes cannot avoid them, fibre brings quiet to the network because it couples nothing in.

  • How much traffic aggregates here?

    A link to a desk carries one user. A riser carries a whole floor. The heavier the aggregation, the sooner fibre with headroom pays for itself.

  • Do devices draw power from the network?

    Access points, cameras, door readers and IP phones take their energy from the data cable. For those points copper is settled, whatever the other criteria say.

  • How long should the installation last?

    Where the expected service life runs into many years, headroom on the main routes is worth having. Extra fibres cost little while pulling; opening the building a second time costs a great deal.

Between the buildings

Site links run on fibre, usually in ground ducting or on external containment. Distance and differences in earth potential between buildings rule copper out here.

B · Backbone

Between the floors

The riser from the main cabinet to each floor cabinet carries aggregated traffic. Fibre with spare cores is the standard answer.

C · Floor

From cabinet to area

From the floor cabinet onwards copper takes over. The runs are short enough, and the endpoints need power from the same cable.

D · Special case

Hall, warehouse, plant room

Large areas and interference-heavy zones get their own cabinet fed by fibre — and from there short copper runs again to the connection points.

What fibre in the building does not fix

Fibre gets proposed as the answer to problems that live somewhere else entirely. None of these change with the medium.

  • A slow internet line stays slow — in-building cabling only affects the internal network
  • Overloaded switches and undersized uplinks remain the bottleneck
  • Patchy wireless coverage does not improve while the access points sit in the wrong places
  • Missing labels and documentation keep fault-finding a manual exercise
  • Endpoints without an optical port still need a converter, a switch or a copper section

Is fibre always the better choice inside a building?

No. Over the short runs to a desk it brings no practical advantage while adding a media converter or a special network card at every endpoint. Its strengths show where distance, electrical interference or heavy aggregation are involved.

Why is fibre installed almost everywhere then?

Because it usually serves as the backbone rather than the connection cable. Between buildings, between floor cabinets and into the equipment room you will find fibre; from the floor cabinet onwards copper covers the last stretch to the device. That division is the norm in commercial property.

What does the copper length limit mean in practice?

A copper channel may not exceed one hundred metres, of which at most ninety are permanently installed. In a long warehouse or across several floors that ceiling arrives quickly — at which point you either add a cabinet or run fibre to that area.

Can fibre power connected devices?

No. Power over the network cable only works on copper. Access points, IP phones, cameras and door readers all draw their energy that way, which is one reason the final metres to a device are almost always copper.

How badly does interference affect copper on a production floor?

Next to drives, welding equipment and large motors, coupled interference can degrade transmission noticeably. Screened copper with clean earthing helps; where the environment is genuinely harsh, fibre is the quieter answer because it picks up nothing electrically.

Does this also cover fibre for private homes?

No. This article deals with cabling commercial property: office buildings, medical practices, warehouses, production floors and equipment rooms. For residential buildings and private connections, telecommunications providers and electrical contractors are the right people to ask.
